[026] I'm an optimistic pirate and I love my black spot

[PUBLIC -- video]

Why can't more shit that happens around here be like that? I mean, come on. Pirates, how is that not cool. I haven't had that much fun from the Admiral's shitty driving since Vegas. Just throw in Prohibition in Chicago and that's like...the trifecta.

Missing Will, and wanting to knife him in the gut, all at the same bloody time? If you will pardon my somewhat blunt language.

I'm certain.

Look, I'd rather this be off the Network. I trust you with this issue and the rest, but not this electronic record.

[He opens his mouth to suggest the mulchpiles behind the greenhouse. Then restrains himself visibly and simply smiles.]

If you are not comfortable with my room, let us pick one of the study rooms in the library.

[Hannibal is sitting there calmly sketching Will's face on a slip of paper as if he fully intends to spend all day at it; not impatient at all. He pushes out the chair across from him for the other man.]

Hello. How are you feeling? [Calm, breezy, patient. The sketch develops inevitably.]

Good for you. [He twitches slightly and glances at the wall. Then shakes his head.] I am not.

The truth is that you're about the one man imprisoned here who has the slightest chance of understanding how I feel. [A sudden stab of the pencil toward the Will sketch's face.]

It does. It just takes work and you have to be talking to the right person.

Like anyone with my particular afflictions I have good days and bad days. This was a bad day. Sometimes I cannot help but dwell upon his absence.

...

[He stares at Richie patiently, just long enough to make him visibly uncomfortable.]

...no.

[Then a tight little smile.] My penchant for elaborate revenge is another issue altogether. Let me simply say that some minds are more comfortable places to live in than others.

The average person does not have to deal with noise in the head, for example. He is not distracted by every movement and conversation going on around him. The walls have never spoken to him. [He continues sketching placidly.]

It does. But such phenomena are controllable. I would not have gotten through medical school if that was not the case.

[He leans back, blinking rapidly and looking thoughtful.] Sometimes the voices are faint, in that very annoying conversation just out of range sort of way. Distracting. Irritating. It makes one nervous. One's blood pressure goes up, heart rate--it becomes impossible to not be tense. And the more the tension rises the worse the entire experience gets.

Other times the voices are very loud but still vague, which is perhaps the most maddening. But sometimes I can hear them quite clearly.

Actually...

[He taps his lips with his finger as he draws from his case studies.]

They can be very demanding. They often call upon me to do violence to others, or whisper false secrets about those people into my ear. Worst of all is when they imitate the person with me, and make it appear that that person is talking.

One of the things that I do to help myself cope is to verify. I check, I make certain that I heard correctly, and I make connections with others whom I know I can trust to help me if I should become confused.

[He doesn't seem to mind the Richiesprawl. In fact he sees it as a good sign.]

Unfortunately Will was one of those people. But I'll let you in on a little secret about him.
